Managing Your (Newly) Remote Team

Right now, remote working has become a necessity for companies all across the globe.

If you are like me, you might have suddenly found yourself managing a completely remote team with little time to prepare.

Honestly, at first, the transition was scary, and I wasn’t sure how we were going to manage.

Now, after almost a month working remotely with my team, I can say that our communication has improved and we have become more productive.

Here is a list of tips that we have implemented that can help you set up you and your team for success:

1. Weekly Positives

One thing that we have been doing since I started Flexxable is starting the week off by listing positives that we achieved the previous week.

I have found that this starts the week off right for the whole team.

We get fired up after going through the positives and then go into our daily tasks. We also keep a note of all the positives of each week, so at the end of the quarter, we can look back and see what we achieved as a team.

 2. Have a Daily Check-In

We use Zoom to have a daily face-to-face video check in every morning.

In this meeting, we have a bit of banter, set the agenda and go through each person’s objective for the day.

It’s essential to see each other’s faces and have some light-hearted conversations mixed in with work talk.

One of the hardest things about working from home, especially if you’re used to an office environment, is the sense of loneliness and isolation that can set in.

3. Communication Tools

It is also important to keep your team connected and communicating throughout the working day.

We use Slack for our day to day questions and Asana to assign tasks. These tools are even available for free right now.

4. Keep it Fun

It is important to still add fun into your team environment and keep morale high.

We did a hipster coffee challenge the other day for a little bit of fun, and I still buy Friday beers for my team.

We are even doing a Pub Quiz as a team over the weekend.

Little things like this are helping keeps spirits high and my team as a unit.

Hopefully, you can take a few tips from this quick little video, and you can implement some of these things with your team if you are struggling with your remote team.

Enjoy!
